Mashao or facial makeup is a popular Chinese traditional art form in Baoji City, northwest China's Shaanxi Province. Painted on the backs of wooden ladles, mashao began as a highlight of the Shehuo parade in the northern parts of China. Facial makeup for Shehuo was usually based on the characters in folktales; it was later painted on ladles to express people's wishes for a good life.
