The Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China's Sichuan Province covers 60,400 square kilometers. It is the source of the ethnic Yi culture and also full of diverse landscapes and other remarkable scenery. However, some of the prefecture's residents had suffered under the shadow of poverty that has hung over the area due to harsh natural conditions and poor infrastructure.

Xide in north central Liangshan was once classified as a national-level poverty-stricken county. In November 2020, Sichuan's provincial government announced that the seven remaining impoverished counties in the prefecture, including Xide County, had removed their "hats of poverty" after five painstaking years of targeted poverty alleviation work.
