Japan's COVID-19 death toll tops 10,000 amid third virus emergency

The death toll from the novel coronavirus in Japan reached 10,000 on Monday as the country battles a fourth wave of infections driven by more contagious variants, according to Kyodo News Agency.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga earlier declared a third state of emergency over COVID-19 in the national capital Tokyo and the western prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo from Sunday to May 11.
