All teams attending the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics will need to test twice for coronavirus within 96 hours before departing for Japan, Kyodo News reported on Sunday.

Last December, the requirement for arrival in Japan was one negative test result within 72 hours, Kyodo News said.

The new policy will first be discussed with the Tokyo Games coronavirus countermeasure panel on Wednesday before being taken to the local International Olympic and International Paralympic organizing committees and Japanese and Tokyo governments for further discussion.

According to Kyodo News, the second edition of the Tokyo Games COVID-19 guidelines will be published on Wednesday and Friday.

The Japanese news agency also revealed other details about COVID-19 protocols for athletes during the Olympics and Paralympics. For example, they will start a 14-day quarantine right after arrival and be tested daily. Also, athletes will be allowed to participate in training or competition, as long as they do it in the athletes' village and the training and competition venues.

IOC, national Olympic committee and sports federation members and media workers will be tested every day for the first three days. After that, they will be retested every four or seven days, depending on how close their contact with athletes will be.

Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo entered a state of emergency for the third time on Sunday. COVID-19 cases grew by 635 in Tokyo and 4,604 nationwide. As a result, the Tokyo Olympic women's volleyball test event will have to happen behind closed doors on the weekend.

Chinese women's national volleyball team arrived at Haneda Airport on Sunday. Coach Lang Ping brought 15 players with her for the first international game since the World Cup in 2019.
