Australia will suspend all direct passenger flights from India until May 15, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Tuesday, following a surge in COVID-19 infections in the world's second-most populous country.

Restrictions on some indirect routes will also be placed, Morrison said, describing the situation in India as "heartbreaking." 

India's new coronavirus cases stayed above the 300,000-mark for a sixth consecutive day on Tuesday. 

Morrison also said an "initial package" of support including ventilators, face masks and goggles will be sent to India and more will be provided.
