Four aftershocks have been reported after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake hit India's northeastern state of Assam on Wednesday, according to local government.

Tremors were felt in the entire state and reports said panic-stricken people rushed out of houses and buildings to gather in open streets.

There were reports of cracks in the walls and floors of some structures, but no reports of immediate casualties, a local official said.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken stock of the damage due to the earthquake over the phone with me and has assured all support to Assam."
