China on Thursday urged the U.S. to view competition with China in a rational way and reiterated its commitment to peaceful development and friendly relationship with the U.S.

U.S. President Joe Biden said Wednesday he welcomed competition, but was not seeking conflict with China or Russia as he put a renewed focus on diplomacy in his first address to Congress on the eve of his 100th day in office.

China is always committed to peaceful development, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told reporters at a news briefing in response to Biden's remarks.

According to Wang, China, as a builder of global peace, a contributor to global development and a defender of international order, is committed to developing relationship with the U.S. featuring mutual respect and win-win cooperation.

China is seeking for peaceful coexistence rather than confrontation with the U.S., Wang stated, while reiterating that the country is determined to defend its national security and development interests.

The spokesperson acknowledged the possible competition between the two countries, but stressed that it should be healthy competition rather than zero sum games.

Wang also said democracy is a universal value possessed by the mankind and the establishment of the democratic system should proceed from the actual situation.

Any interference in the name of democracy is in fact a manipulation of the democratic value, which will end up with separation, Wang pointed out.

The spokesperson also criticized the double standard laid by the U.S., saying that on the one hand it urges other countries to follow international rules, while on the other it repeatedly breaches the rule by politicizing economic and technical issues in an attempt to contain the rise of China.

Stressing that China is committed to improving people's livelihood, Wang urged the U.S. side to abandon ideological biases and view China's development in a rational way.
