A remote Japanese fishing town in Tokyo has sparked debate after spending coronavirus relief funds on a giant squid statue that cost nearly $250,000 in a controversial bid to boost post-pandemic tourism. It was mostly paid for with a national tax grant to aid communities hit financially by COVID-19 restrictions. NHK said Japan has recorded nearly 622,000 cases of novel coronavirus infection and about 10,600 deaths from the disease.
