China calls on U.S. to stop hegemony and live up to its promise

When asked to comment on U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken's recent remarks saying some U.S. actions in recent years have undermined the world order, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said she hopes to see Washington stop "forming circles."

"Recently, the U.S. side has - for multiple times - expressed its will to re-join certain multilateral organizations or agreements, yet we are still seeing America acting in hegemony although in the name of multilateralism," Hua said on Tuesday in a regular press briefing.

Beijing hopes that Washington could live up to its promises, Hua added, urging strict adherence to the vows the U.S. made to the United Nations charter.

Washington announced its exit from various important international agreements during the tenure of former President Donald Trump, including the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris Agreement. The withdraw from the climate change deal on November 4, 2020 made it the only nation among nearly 200 signatories to abandon the global agenda on combating climate change.

"I know that some of our actions in recent years have undermined the rules-based order and led others to question whether we are still committed to it," Blinken said at last week's United Nations Security Council Open Debate on Multilateralism.
