Most of China is enjoying the benefits of having effectively controlled COVID-19, a World Health Organization (WHO) official said on Monday.

Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO Health Emergencies Program, made the remarks while replying to a question over the annual Wuhan Strawberry Music Festival that attracted thousands of revelers and global media outlets' attention earlier this month after the once hardest-hit Chinese city revived from the pandemic.

Noting that some countries like China have a very low incidence rate but remain exceptionally vigilant to occasional clusters, Ryan said that those countries "react extremely quickly when they see those clusters in order to maintain that level of control."

Agreeing with Ryan, Maria Van Kerkhove, COVID-19 technical lead for the WHO, said that those countries have shown the world that "with a comprehensive approach, seen all the way through, we can really keep it (the pandemic) down."

"What we see in Wuhan and what we see in other parts around the world is a demonstration of how this comprehensive approach works in controlling COVID-19 even without the vaccine," Kerkhove said.

The approach she advocated includes detection, providing care for patients in isolation facilities, isolating those with mild symptoms or asymptomatic, and establishing contact tracing systems.

Kerkhove said it's important to remain ready since the virus is still circulating in many parts of the world.

Since April 21, China has reported zero domestically transmitted cases, according to the National Health Commission.

Meanwhile, just as countries across the world are pursuing COVID-19 vaccines in their fight against the virus, the world's most populous country has also enhanced efforts in mass vaccine roll-out in its large territory.

Data from NHC showed that the Chinese mainland has administered more than 330 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines as of Monday.
