The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday slammed the "democracy conference" held in Copenhagen as "a downright political farce."
The conference, hosted by an organization known for its long-time "spreading rumors and lies about China," is filled with ideological prejudices, said Hua Chunying, a spokesperson from the ministry.
The conference, organized by the Alliance of Democracies on Monday and Tuesday in the Danish capital, has invited Taiwan's Tsai Ing-wen and Hong Kong separatist Nathan Law.
At the conference, Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod denounced recent sanctions imposed by China against the EU as "deplorable," reported Reuters on Monday.
When asked about the conference, Hua, at a regular briefing, stressed that Taiwan and Hong Kong issues are China's internal affairs that no other country or individual has the right to interfere.
She has urged individuals or governments involved to respect China's sovereignty instead of sending the wrong signals to secessionists.
Democracy should not become a political tool to suppress other countries, and European politicians should understand its real definition and benefits for the masses, Hua said.
On Tuesday, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, also called the conference a "political farce" and denounced Tsai's speech.
"We urged the relative countries to abide by one-China principle and not to provide any stage or convenience for the Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party authority to seek 'Taiwan independence,'" Zhu said.
