In south China's island province of Hainan, bird experts are seeing more and more bee-eaters at the Wuyuanhe National Wetland Park in Haikou City. These small and colorful birds come to southern China to breed during summer and migrate to Southeast Asia during winter. In 2018, the monitor station at Wuyuanhe recorded 26 individuals. The number increased to 56 in 2019, and 58 in 2020. This year, the population of bee-eaters here has increased to 72.

Unlike most birds, which nest on trees or in bushes, bee-eaters dig out their burrows in sand dunes. The wetlands at Wuyuanhe provide excellent breeding spots for these beautiful birds.
