China completely understands and supports developing countries' appeals for waiving IP rights for COVID-19 vaccines, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said on Monday.

As the largest developing country and a responsible member in the global community, China will keep making efforts to fight against the pandemic, as well as support fair vaccine access for developing countries, said Zhao.

Zhao added that China has continuously contributed to making vaccines accessible and affordable for developing countries apart from its large population and tight vaccine supply.

He said the country has provided vaccine aid to over 80 countries and three international organizations. It also exported vaccines to over 50 countries. China has worked with over 10 developing countries including Egypt and United Arab Emirates on technology transfer and cooperated on mass production for COVID-19 vaccines.

China's Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine was recently approved by the World Health Organization for emergency use, while it's also under consideration for COVAX, according to Zhao.

Zhao also called on more countries to help developing ones acquire vaccines to beat the pandemic.
