China expressed strong opposition on Wednesday to a U.S. destroyer sailing through the Taiwan Straits, saying it has damaged regional peace and stability.

China has closely followed the U.S. warship's entire journey through the Taiwan Straits and stands ready to deal with all threats and provocations, Senior Colonel Zhang Chunhui of the People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theater Command said in a notice published on Wednesday morning.

The U.S. confirmed on Tuesday that the USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54) guided missile destroyer conducted a routine transit through the Taiwan Straits "in accordance with international law."

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian also responded on Wednesday saying that U.S. ships have repeatedly flaunted their prowess in the Taiwan Straits recently, causing trouble and provocation, which is not a commitment to any "freedom and openness."

Zhao noted that the U.S.' moves have seriously jeopardized peace and stability in the region and that China will resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"We urge the U.S. side to play a constructive role for regional peace and stability," he added.
