Indian rescuers are searching for 89 people who are still unaccounted for after a barge sank off the coast of Mumbai amid cyclone Tauktae.

A total of 184 personnel have been rescued so far, Indian Navy spokesperson tweeted on Wednesday morning, adding air and sea rescue mission continues for survivors.

Barge P305 first went adrift and subsequently sank at an offshore oilfield in Mumbai on Tuesday morning with 273 people on board.

Tauktae, which made landfall late on Monday in India's western Gujarat state, has devastated power pylons, trees and houses. Local authorities said at least 29 people were killed.

The powerful storm has also posed challenges to the rescue and search operation, with waves reaching 20 to 25 feet amid poor visibility.

India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday that the storm had weakened into depression.
