The U.S. House voted 252-175 on Wednesday to approve legislation paving the way to create an independent and bipartisan commission to probe the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

Styled after the September 11, 2001 panel that probed terrorist attacks on the United States, the legislation would establish an independent, 10-member commission. The commission would make recommendations by the end of the year.

The bill now goes to the Senate, where the Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, said he opposed the measure, casting further doubt over it becoming law, which will require at least 10 GOP senators to sign on to it so as to overcome the filibuster.

On January 6, a group of former U.S. President Donald Trump's supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol building and interrupted the Congress' electoral vote count of Joe Biden's presidential victory.

The riots have left five people dead, including a Capitol police officer.

The commission would produce a public report including recommendations for preventing another Capitol attack. It would be charged with examining security and intelligence failures surrounding the riot.

Trump on Tuesday urged Republicans to vote against the proposal, calling it a "trap" inspired by "the radical left."
