Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a speech at the Global Health Summit via video link from Beijing on Friday.

The summit, jointly held by Italian G20 presidency and the European Commission, was held in Rome, capital of Italy.

Here are the key takeaways from President Xi's speech.

Waiving vaccine IPRs

China supports the World Trade Organization and other international institutions in making an early decision on waiving intellectual property rights on COVID-19 vaccines, a move China backs, Xi told the summit.

In his speech, he also announced that China will provide an additional $3 billion in international aid over the next three years to support COVID-19 response as well as economic and social recovery in other developing countries.

A battle for the people, by the people

The battle with COVID-19 is one for the people and by the people, President Xi said.

"We must put people's lives and health front and center, demonstrate a great sense of political responsibility and courage, and make extraordinary responses to an extraordinary challenge," Xi noted.

He also called for efforts to truly respect the value and dignity of every human life.

An international forum on vaccine cooperation

China proposes setting up an international forum on vaccine cooperation for vaccine-developing and producing countries, companies, and other stakeholders to explore ways of promoting fair and equitable distribution of vaccines around the world, Xi said.

China also supports its vaccine companies in transferring technologies to other developing countries and carrying out joint production with them, he told the event.

China's commitment to helping the world

China has honored its commitment and carried out large-scale global humanitarian actions to help the world fight the COVID-19 pandemic, Xi said.

Notwithstanding the limited production capacity and enormous demand at home, China has honored its commitment by providing free vaccines to more than 80 developing countries in urgent need and exporting vaccines to 43 countries, he said.

"We have provided 2 billion U.S. dollars in assistance for the COVID-19 response and economic and social recovery in developing countries hit by the pandemic," Xi told the summit.

China will provide an additional 3 billion U.S. dollars in international aid over the next three years to support COVID-19 response and economic and social recovery in other developing countries, he added.
