Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza have laid down their weapons after 11 days of bloody conflict. The ceasefire was mediated by Egypt, and came into effect early Friday morning. Israel approved the truce on Thursday. Hamas, which rules the Palestinian enclave of Gaza, said it had halted firing rockets. However, both sides said they stood ready to retaliate to any truce violations by the other.
