01:03

Twenty-one runners have been confirmed dead after extreme weather hit an ultra-marathon race in northwest China's Gansu Province. According to the local authorities, hailstones, freezing rain and gale force winds caused multiple cases of hypothermia. Temperatures dropped further after nightfall, complicating the rescue operation. Rescue teams are still searching for one of the 172 runners in the 100-kilometer race, who remains unaccounted for.
