Changsha mourning for China's 'father of hybrid rice'

Chinese agronomist and academician Yuan Longping, globally renowned for developing the first hybrid rice strains, died on Saturday at the age of 91. On the streets of Changsha in Hunan Province, where he died, people spontaneously gathered to bid farewell to Yuan. Cars sounded their horns in tribute. The United Nations, including its Food and Agriculture Organization, expressed condolences over Yuan's death. They paid tribute to his outstanding contributions to global food security and poverty alleviation.
