Orchid cactus: A tropical beauty that needs extra care
By Xu Chenlu

As an easy-care plant, the cactus is one of the most popular houseplants among gardeners. However, not all cactus species can thrive with only little attention. The orchid cactus, an attractive plant that can produce gorgeous flowers, is a "picky" one.

The orchid cactus is native to the tropical forests of Mexico, and is cultivated around the world. Unlike most cactuses, it enjoys receiving a lot of water. Its flowers, which are bright red with yellow stamens in the center, usually bloom from April to June. With adequate care, the flower can flourish for quite some time.

To grow the plant, make sure to put it in rich, well-drained soil. Water and fertilize it regularly and frequently to make sure it gets enough moisture and nutrition to produce the flower. The cactus does not like extreme heat or cold, so keep it indoors in cool, humid air. As long as you give it enough attention and care, it can live for years and bring you beautiful flowers annually.
