The World Health Assembly (WHA) declining to invite the Taiwan region as an observer once again proves that the one-China principle is the aspiration of the international community and the overriding trend that brooks no challenges, said the Chinese Foreign Ministry in a statement.
The statement came after the WHA general committee denied a proposal initiated by the U.S and a number of European Union countries.
Earlier, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said the Chinese mainland is urging the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of the Taiwan region to stop political manipulation on the pretext of the coronavirus in a Monday press briefing.
Before the assembly, more than 150 countries had expressed their support for China's decision through diplomatic channels. Meanwhile, representatives of nearly 80 member states had sent letters to the World Health Organization (WHO) to express their adherence to the one-China principle and their opposition to Taiwan's participation in the WHA, according to the statement.
The DPP has obstinately adhered to the separatist position of "Taiwan independence" and refused to recognize the 1992 Consensus, thereby unilaterally undermining the political foundation for Taiwan's participation in the WHA, Zhao said.
"Taiwan's participation in the activities of international organizations, including the WHO must be dealt with in accordance with the one-China principle," he said, adding that the one-China principle is an international norm and the common consensus of the global community.
