Chelsea defeated Manchester City 1-0 in the Champions League final in Porto, Portugal on Saturday, with a first-half goal scored by 21-year-old Kai Havertz, who is famously known for the 80-million-euro transfer fee that Chelsea paid Bayer Leverkusen to get him last summer.

At the 43rd minute, the German youngster latched on to Mason Mount's pass and evaded City keeper Ederson before rolling the ball into an empty net.

In the second half the match, City labored searching for openings and their cause was not helped when playmaker Kevin de Bruyne went off injured after a clash of heads.

Chelsea survived seven minutes of stoppage time with Riyad Mahrez going agonizingly close for City before the celebrations from Chelsea's travelling fans could begin.

Premier League champions Man City thus suffered the disappointment of not being able to create club history, as this would have been their first Champions League title.

Chelsea Manager Thomas Tuchel has become the third German coach in a row to lift the trophy in last three years, following Jurgen Klopp of Liverpool in 2019 and Hansi Flick of Bayern Munich in 2020.

Tuchel took over the position from Frank Lampard in January this year, and soon led the team with an impressive 11-match winning streak. The club finished fourth in the Premier League season, 19 points behind Man City. However, with yesterday's victory, they have won Pep Guardiola's side three times in six weeks.

Hundreds of Chelsea's supporters watching the game from a fanzine in downtown Porto erupted in chants as soon as the match was over.

"I can't believe it, this is the best day ever, I want to cry," a supporter wearing a Chelsea's t-shirt told CGTN, as his friends surrounded him in chants.

Another fan, who flew from Istanbul to watch the game said the trip to Portugal "was worth it."

"Fantastic, [Chelsea] was the only London team to win it twice," another man said.

This was Chelsea's second Champions League title, with the first won in 2012.
