In New Zealand, extreme flooding is forcing thousands of people to prepare for a mass evacuation. Heavy rains pounded the South Island overnight, causing widespread disruptions. Three towns near Christchurch on Sunday declared states of emergency as water levels continue to rise. The flooding has cut off roads, and swelled the Ashburton River, causing residents there to flee to safety. Officials are maintaining a red-alert severe weather warning for the Canterbury region.
