Nearly half of U.S. states are stopping unemployment aid earlier than planned. In the American Rescue Plan of 2021, the federal government authorized an extra $300 a week in jobless aid and extended pandemic unemployment assistance for the self-employed earlier, which will expire on September 6. However, by canceling participation in these programs early, it leaves millions of Americans struggling in the lurch this summer.
