Japan started vaccinating Tokyo Games-bound athletes on Tuesday with officials saying that about 200 athletes were vaccinated with the BioNTech COVID-19 shot at a training center on the first day of the rollout, according to local media.

Japanese Olympic Committee officials did not name any of the vaccinated athletes and restricted coverage of the event, local media said.

Around 1,600 people including 600 athletes and coaches with the Japanese delegation will be inoculated ahead of the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics, which are scheduled to open on July 23.
