A three-day mourning was ordered by Burkina Faso's President Roch Marc Christian Kabore on Saturday after about 100 civilians were killed in an overnight attack on a village in northern Burkina Faso.

The government said terrorists struck during the night on Friday, killing residents of the village of Solhan in Yagha Province and burning homes and the market. Yet, no group has claimed responsibility so far.

The toll made it the country's deadliest attack in recent years.

According to Reuters report, attacks by terrorists linked to al-Qaeda and the ISIL in West Africa's Sahel region have risen sharply since the start of the year, particularly in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, with civilians bearing the brunt.

Violence in Burkina Faso has displaced more than 1.14 million people in just over two years, while the poor, arid country hosts some 20,000 refugees from neighboring Mali seeking safety. In March, attackers killed 137 people in coordinated raids on villages in southwestern Niger.
