Husain Al-Musallam of Kuwait was elected new president of FINA, the world swimming governing body, while China's first Olympic champion diver Zhou Jihong was voted as vice president during the FINA General Congress 2021 in Doha, Qatar on Saturday.

Al-Musallam succeeded Julio Maglione of Uruguay, who held the president's role for 12 years.

Zhou, who claimed the women's 10 meters platform gold medal in 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, was voted in among five vice presidents.

About 189 delegates from 119 national federations attended the Congress in Doha, while 202 members from 102 national federations participated in the Congress via livestream and cast their vote through an online system.

The new FINA president, bureau members, vice presidents, ethics panel and audit committee members were elected after several reports were made, including the report of the FINA Bureau on its activities since the previous General Congress (2019), the financial report of the FINA Honorary Treasurer and the reports of the FINA Audit Committee and FINA External Auditor.
