Hackers breached McDonald's servers and exposed some customer and employee information, the company said on Friday, making it the latest global firm to be targeted by cyber-criminals.

The world's largest burger chain confirmed in a statement that a data breach occurred in its restaurants in South Korea and China's Taiwan region.

The announcement by the fast food giant came amid a wave of cyberattacks worldwide targeting everything from meatpacking plants to pipelines to public utilities, some of which have had to pay ransoms to hackers.

McDonald's said its day-to-day operations were not affected and that a ransom was not involved.

The attackers accessed e-mails, phone numbers and delivery addresses, but the breach did not include customer payment information, the company said.

The details of the breach emerged as a result of an investigation by external consultants following unauthorized activity on the company's network.

"While we were able to close off access quickly after identification, our investigation has determined that a small number of files were accessed, some of which contained personal data," McDonald's said.

"A few additional markets will take steps to address files that contained employee personal data," the company added, without elaborating.
