Located on an island to the northeast of Shanghai, the shipyard is responsible for building, repairing and converting civilian and military ships. The history of the shipyard traces back to 1865 in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the shipyard started to play vital roles in the development of China's national industry and innovation.
