Studies show that having a furry companion keeps stress and anxiety at bay. Keeping a pet offers a long list of mental and physical benefits for humans, but it shouldn't be a one-way street. We also need to do our part to be a responsible dog parent.

Motorcycle-racer-turned-dog-whisperer, Adrien Macera has been running Diddy's Hood, a dog boarding, training and rehabilitation facility in Beijing for the past four years. As a fur dad of five dogs and a dog rescuer himself, he aims to help man, and their best friend, build a positive and loving relationship.

In our latest "Job Hopper" series, CGTN Host Louisa Lee takes her rescued pup, Lucas, to meet Macera for a day of human-canine bonding session. Who's being trained? Louisa or Lucas? Watch the video to find out!

From walks to tricks, Adrien tells Louisa the significance of using positive reinforcements to guide our dogs. It can help stimulate their minds, and boost their confidence, not to mention it can be fun for both parties.

Adrien also stresses that it's essential to identify that different dogs have different needs and interests, but it doesn't mean we cannot teach an old dog new tricks. For example, Lucas might not love swimming, but we can train him to view that swimming is a mission he needs to achieve, and by doing that, he too can find gratification accomplishing it. Satisfying their sense of fulfillment and accomplishment is just as important as giving them enough exercise, as all this can equate to a happier and healthier dog in return.

While it's crucial to understand the minds of our furry companions, it's also imperative to treat them right.

One report shows that China's pet industry is growing at a rapid pace, with owners' spending reaching a staggering 202 billion yuan ($29 billion) in 2019. With so much money pouring into the market, there's even more reason to raise awareness about the proper treatment of animals.

And more animal advocates are jumping on the "Adopt Don't Shop" bandwagon, including a Wuhan-based rescue group, Furry Angels Haven, founded by a two-woman team, Fita and Xenia.

With more than 250 dogs and cats under their care, they have devoted themselves to finding a forever-home for these abandoned, and often abused, animals.

The ladies share the same belief as Louisa: treat them wholeheartedly with love, kindness, care, respect, and nothing less.
