Voters go to the polls to choose Iran's new president
00:41

In Iran, polls are open for the presidential election. And the first to cast a ballot was Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The candidate widely seen as the front-runner is Ebrahim Raisi, a conservative judge and close ally of Iran's leader. A lower turnout than usual is expected, due to widespread discontent over the economy and disqualification of more moderate candidates. Authorities say some 67,000 polling stations are prepared with residents encouraged to follow coronavirus restrictions. The election is held as talks continue to revive the 2015 nuclear deal but Iranian officials say the vote will not influence negotiations.
