At least 63 people have died so far across China's Taiwan region after getting AstraZeneca's COVID-19 shots as the island expanded the vaccination program to the elderly, according to local media on Sunday.

It's still officially unclear if the deaths were linked to the jab.

Taiwan expanded its inoculation drive on June 15, including vaccinating people aged over 75. But emerging reports of people dying after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine have undermined the public's willingness for vaccination.

Local officials said a more thorough investigation is needed to determine whether there is a correlation between the deaths and the vaccination.

Taiwan region has reported 107 new, locally transmitted COVID-19 cases and 11 deaths, local health authorities said on Sunday.
