Panda Shin Shin gave birth to two cubs at the Ueno Zoological Gardens in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday.

The twins, whose sex hasn't been determined, were born just after midnight an hour and a half apart. One of them weighed 124 grams, while the weight of the other was not immediately known, according to the metropolitan government.

Panda Shin Shin and Ri Ri, on loan from China since 2011, mated naturally in March.

This is Shin Shin's second birth after her daughter Xiang Xiang, who was born in June 2017.

Xiang Xiang was supposed to be sent back to China when she turned two years old, but Japan negotiated an extended stay. She is scheduled to be returned to China by the end of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
