At least five people were killed and hundreds were injured when a rare tornado and hailstones hit the South Moravia Region of the Czech Republic on Thursday night, AFP news agency reported citing rescuers.

The tornado struck on Thursday evening, destroying parts of some towns as strong storms swept through the area. 

Local media said at least 150 people were injured and some are in critical condition.

The tornado also caused extensive power outages and traffic disruptions. Over 75,000 households and companies have been left without power as of Friday morning, Czech News Agency (CTK) said.
