In 1978, China launched its campaign of reform and opening-up. Besides encouraging private businesses, the government relaxed restrictions on foreign trade and investment.

This kick-started astounding growth over the following decades. And foreign trade gets some of the credit, as China edges toward what it calls a moderately prosperous society.
