Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton were international communists from the U.S. who came to China in 1946 and 1948, respectively. Previously, Engst had worked in agriculture, while Hinton had been a nuclear physicist involved in the Manhattan Project. The couple married in Yan'an in 1949 and settled in China, where they spent many decades as dairy farmers.
