Xinjiang July riots: Victims' relatives still haunted by grim memories
03:01

On July 5, 2009, hundreds of rioters gathered at a busy market area in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region's capital Urumqi. They attacked police officers and set patrol vehicles on fire. Rioters chased down passers-by and beat them.

It was the beginning of a three-day rampage that saw stores looted, restaurants burned and people murdered in broad daylight.

Officials said nearly 200 people were killed and more than 1,700 wounded. Relatives of victims and witnesses said they are still haunted by the memories.
