Political parties should shoulder the historic responsibility of seeking happiness for the people and progress for humanity, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks in a keynote speech delivered at the CPC and World Political Parties Summit via video link.

Xi said that political parties should shoulder the responsibility of setting direction to shape the shared future of mankind, and strengthening consensus to uphold and promote common values of humanity.

The fruits of development must be more widely and more equitably distributed across peoples of all countries, he said, noting that development is the right of all countries, not the privilege of a few.

In the face of global risks and challenges, strengthening cooperation is the responsibility of political parties, he stressed, adding that they should also improve governance to strengthen their ability to seek happiness for the people.
