With a history spanning over 1,000 years, Batang Xianzi is a beautiful and lyrical combination of Tibetan folk songs and dances. Its home, Batang County of southwest China's Sichuan Province, is an important stop along the ancient Tea Horse Road, a trade route through Yunnan, Sichuan, and Tibet in southwest China. It was listed among the first group of China's national intangible heritage items in 2006. 63-year-old inheritor Wang Tashi has been playing and making Xianzi for over 50 years. Over the decades, he has been calling for popularizing music education in schools to better promote the inheritance of the folk art, and has instructed dozens of students to promote the music worldwide.
