A new art museum officially opened to the public on Thursday in Shanghai, with exhibitions presenting classic works from world-renown galleries and artists.

The Museum of Art Pudong (MAP) is located near the landmark Oriental Pearl Tower on the bank of the Huangpu River, turning the iconic financial hub into an important international culture exchange platform.

Designed by French architect and Pritzker Architecture Prize winner Jean Nouvel, the museum has an exhibition area of over 10,000 square meters and 13 exhibition halls.

Among them, two special "glass halls" have a 55-meter-wide glass wall, not only allowing visitors to view the Bund scenery across the river, but also acting as LED screens that can be used for art installation.

Significant art pieces on show

For its grand opening, the museum has drawn from the collections of the UK's prestigious Tate galleries. The exhibition "Light: Works from Tate's Collection" displays more than 100 works from 46 artists spanning over 200 years to show the evolution of how light has been used in art creation.

One of the Tate's most beloved paintings "Ophelia," the hanging sculpture "Stardust Particle," and the painting "Light and Colour (Goethe's Theory) - the Morning after the Deluge - Moses Writing the Book of Genesis" are among those included in the exhibition, which runs from July 8 to November 14.

Also introduced on Thursday was the Museum Fundació Joan Miró's first exhibition in China, "Joan Miró: Women · Birds · Stars," featuring more than 60 art pieces by the Catalan painter and sculpturer.

Chinese contemporary painter Cai Guoqiang, the museum's first commissioned artist, meanwhile brought his solo exhibition "Cai Guoqiang: Odyssey and Homecoming," along with the specially-created large kinetic light installation "Encounter with the Unknown," for the opening.
