It's been more than a week since Zhai Mo and his team began the journey around the arctic.

To finish the world's first non-stop arctic circumvention on a powerless ship, the three-person crew were preparing for months.

What kind of boat can drift on the world's coldest ocean for more than 100 days? Let's check out some of the cool stuff on it.

Not completely powerless?

To our reporters' surprise, the boat is equipped with an engine – why they still claim it's a powerless boat then?

It turned out the engine is not used to move the boat. Instead, it's used to generate electricity for various devices on the boat, including a complete set of satellite video livestreaming system to support CGTN's live coverage of the adventure.

Watch: Zhai Mo talks live on CGTN Digital about the top 5 challenges on the voyage to the arctic.

The satellite devices are the only way Zhai communicates with the world because there are no smartphone signal towers in the ocean. The satellite signals can be converted to cellular and Wi-Fi data so Zhai can still post on social media.

As CGTN learned from Zhai, the engine will be used to power the boat under urgent situations, especially when the wind dies out entirely for too long that the crew can no longer meet the schedule.

The ship can also harness the power of sunlight to power a refrigerator. Unfortunately, it's confirmed last Sunday that the solar panels have broken by storms, meaning some food on the ship will go bad faster than planned.

The good news is, the ship is carrying an abundance of food, so the broken panels won't affect the crew's survival.

Bulky and solid

The ship, named "Zhai Mo 1" by the captain and "China Mobile GoTone" by the sponsoring telecom giant, is larger than a lot of people have imagined.

Twenty-five meters in length and more than 27 meters in height, the ship can host at least five people. The size is more than enough for the current crew of three.

The double-mast ship was made in Germany and is 27 years old.

Unlike the mainstream fiberglass boats, the Zhai Mo 1 has an aluminum shell, offering better protection against the deadly floating ice on the arctic.

As Zhai and his team sail toward the arctic, we expect him to reveal more secrets of the ship in livestreams and social media. Follow CGTN's coverage to learn more about this amazing adventure.
