China's Eco Forum Global Guiyang begins on July 12
China will hold the Eco Forum Global Guiyang next week. It's the only state-level international forum in China with "ecological civilization" as its theme.
This year focuses on "fostering a community of life for humans and nature through green and low carbon development."
Organizers say it aims to build an important platform for international cooperation in the building of an ecological civilization and demonstrate the achievements of China in this area.
Five hundred guests are expected to attend the event, including domestic and foreign political leaders, government officials, top scholars and experts, business leaders and heads of non-governmental organizations.
More than 20 thematic forums on topics ranging from green energy and climate change to marine conservation will take place, as will negotiations for the sale and trade of green products and online and offline exhibitions showcasing ecological achievements.
"The forum has been held 10 times before, and we will add new content to this year's event. We will particularly focus on the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and China's goal of reaching peak carbon dioxide emissions in 2030 and carbon neutrality in 2060," said Lu Yongzheng, head of the EFG Services and Security Working Group.
Ecological civilization has been an important task for the country since the mission was first put into the Communist Party of China's Constitution in 2012. The country has witnessed a series of achievements ever since.
"China has made or amended nearly 30 laws and regulations related to the protection of the environment. The percentage of forest coverage in the country has maintained consecutive two-digit growth over the past 30 years. China's natural reserve area takes up 18 percent of the country's land," said Cui Shuhong, a senior official from the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment.
Cui also said China has become an important participant, contributor and pioneer in the construction of global ecological civilization. The nation will properly implement multilateral agreements on the environment and demonstrate its vision on climate change. China is preparing to host the UN Biodiversity Conference in Kunming later this year.
