On July 7, the White House announced the extension of the so-called National Emergency with Respect to Hong Kong and related sanctions. This shows that the Biden administration is still following his predecessor's wrong policy of meddling in Hong Kong affairs, which are part of China's internal affairs. The move is a breach of international law and the fundamental principles of international relations, an unrepentant repetition of past mistakes, and a pure hegemonic act. China expresses strong indignation and condemnation against it.

Washington said the emergency was extended mainly to deal with the ongoing "threat" to the national security, foreign policy, and economic interest of the United States constituted by China's actions toward Hong Kong. This is ridiculous. Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China, and the central government holding comprehensive jurisdiction over it is therefore entirely China's internal affair. How is it in any way related to the U.S., and what threat does it pose to America's security? The American Chamber of Commerce in China recently released the latest American Business in China White Paper, reporting that two-third of American businesses are planning to increase their investment in China. How would any U.S. company invest in a territory that threatens their own country?

Actually, speaking of "threat," the U.S. has long been emboldening anti-China rioters in Hong Kong and sparing no effort in vilifying China. That is a downright threat to China's sovereignty, security and development! The renewal of sanctions with respect to Hong Kong further exposes the sinister intention of some Americans to destabilize Hong Kong and pressure China.

But however hard they try to stir up trouble, they are only doing it in vain. Today's Hong Kong is no longer a place where they can carry out their hideous plots.

Over the past year, the central government of China implemented the Hong Kong national security law and improved Hong Kong's electoral system, which helped uphold national security, restore social stability and protect Hong Kong people's rights. The city is taking on a new look.

Recently, at the 47th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Joephy Chan Wing-Yan, a young Hong Kong resident, spoke as a non-government representative. She said the security law was welcomed in Hong Kong, as it protected people's rights to live a normal life. Chan called on the West to understand that young people in Hong Kong love the city and China as a whole and reject interventions from external forces.

Last month, a team of Chinese space experts visited the special administrative region and received a warm welcome. People in Hong Kong said, "These scientists are the real stars we should look up to!" China's ever-increasing prosperity has made Hong Kong people proud of being Chinese. It is also the irresistible will of the people that is powerful enough to kick out anti-China, destabilizing forces.

When slapping Hong Kong-related sanctions last year, the U.S. claimed there would be a massive pull-out of foreign investment from the city. It turns out, after a year, that Hong Kong's attraction to overseas investment has significantly increased thanks to the implementation of the national security law. Statistics show that last year, an estimated $50 billion worth of capital flowed into Hong Kong, and the city's stock exchange ranked second globally in terms of the total amount of IPO funds raised. In the first quarter of 2021, Hong Kong's GDP expanded by 7.9 percent against the same period last year. A report recently released by the International Monetary Fund reaffirmed Hong Kong's status as an international financial center.

Hong Kong's development is built on its people's hard work and the mainland's firm support, rather than charity from other countries. The U.S. did not and will not succeed in intimidating Hong Kong through sanctions. Attempts to smear China's actions related to Hong Kong will not stop the restoration of social order and the further prosperity of the city. Long gone are the days when external forces arbitrarily interfered in Hong Kong affairs!
