Local villagers near the city of Datong in northern China's Shanxi Province have been busy picking daylilies from about 3 a.m. to 10 a.m., which is the best time to harvest them. The flowers need to be picked before the buds bloom in strong sunshine. Daylilies are edible vegetables used in Chinese cuisine and Datong has been growing daylilies for over 600 years.
