Environmentalists have applauded a proposal by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee to put the Great Barrier Reef on its list of World Heritage in Danger. In a draft decision to be voted on in the coming days, the proposal says "there is no possible doubt" that the network of corals off Australia's northeast coast is "facing ascertained danger." Australia has rejected the plan and has been lobbying other members of the World Heritage Committee to postpone a decision until next year.
