China's Li Fabin produced a near-flawless display to win the gold medal in men's 61kg weightlifting at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday. It is China's second triumph in the sport after Hou Zhihui won the women's 49kg event a day earlier.

Li's gold was the first won by a male Chinese athlete in Tokyo. He lifted 141kg in the snatch and 172kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 313kg. Both his clean and jerk and total weight set Olympic records.

Li was the final competitor and his stiffest competition came from Indonesia's Eko Yuli Irawan, who lifted 137kg but failed to raise 141kg. Li's successfully lifted 137kg before lifting 141kg in his third snatch to take the lead.

Irawan completed his first clean and jerk at 165kg. But Li responded with 166kg in his first attempt. He was a little imbalanced while lifting the barbell but managed to stand firmly with one foot on the ground. He followed that lift with 172kg in his second attempt.

Irawan decided to challenge 177kg, which would smash the clean and jerk world record of 174kg. However, his desperate move did not lead to victory. Irawan's two failed attempts sealed the title for Li, who would attempt to lift 178kg but fall short.
