Cheung Ka-long from China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) made history when he defeated Italy's Daniele Garozzo 15-11 to win the men's foil individual gold at the Tokyo Olympics on Monday.
Cheung, 24, is Hong Kong's first ever Olympic fencing medalist.
Carrie Lam, chief executive of the HKSAR, congratulated Cheung's win, saying that his breakthrough showcased the strength of Hong Kong athletes.
