Liao Qiuyun secured a Tokyo Olympics silver medal for Team China in the women's 55kg weightlifting event on Monday, finishing with 223kg in total.

Liao ranked second with 97kg in snatch, tying with Hidilyn Diaz from the Philippines, with Muattar Nabieva of Uzbekistan finishing on top in the first category with 98kg.

Nabieva failed on her first attempt in clean and jerk, finishing on 117kg which later denied her the chance of winning a gold medal as Liao and Diaz went into an intense neck-to-neck chase.

Liao set her first attempt at 118kg, which she finished with ease. Diaz also managed to succeed on her first attempt at 119kg, posing a challenge to Liao.

They originally both set their second attempts on 123kg, but after Liao's successful completion, Diaz raised the stakes, taking on 124kg in her second try followed by Liao raising her third attempt to 126kg.

Diaz wasn't going to give up her leading edge, 1kg over Liao, adjusting her last attempt to an equaling 126kg, then raised to 127kg, which she also managed to complete.

Liao wasn't able to top Diaz eventually, finishing 1kg short of the gold medalist.
