Chinese weightlifter Shi Zhiyong clinched the gold medal at Tokyo Olympics men's 73-kilogram final on Wednesday.

Shi refreshed Olympic record twice (163kg, 166kg) in snatch and broke world record with his total of 364kg.

Shi was the last to lift. The best performance in snatch before his appearance was 156kg by Julio Mayora of Venezuela.

Then came the Chinese legend who chose 158kg in his first snatch attempt. He did not even sweat lifting the barbell over his head. Shi made full use of the following two lifts to make the competition more exciting. He picked 163kg in the second attempt, lifted it and broke the Olympic record. Then he tried 166kg, lifted it again and refreshed the Olympic record just created by himself.

The clean and jerk contest was more about how hard Shi could push his limit than who would win the title. It did not take him much work to succeed in lifting 188kg in his first attempt. But he failed in 192kg in the second lift because two of the referees gave him red lights.

Though the total number of 354kg was good enough for Shi to secure the gold, he chose 198kg in his last attempt and lifted it again, not only breaking the Olympic record for clean and jerk, but also setting a new world record for total.

Mayora had the silver and Briken Calja of Albania got the bronze medal.
